Composition shingles used to be made with an organic cotton felt mat. This mat was
saturated with asphalt and then coated with granules. The mat was able
to soak up enough asphalt to give the shingle sufficient weight.
As the price of cotton rose, shingle manufacturers decided to use fiberglass
as a mat 20 years ago. Unlike the old organic mat, the thin fiberglass mat did
not absorb asphalt. Limestone was added to the fiberglass mat as a filler to
increase the shingle's weight because it was cheap and plentiful. The bacteria
that turns shingle roofs black, Gloeocapsa magma, didn't have a food source
in the past. Now it feeds on the limestone in today’s fiberglass shingles.
